Founded by King Alfonso X "the Wise" in the thirteenth century, is an interesting mix of modern architecture and vestiges of a medieval past, since the eastern part proudly boasts the old area and the western area of rock art. You can begin your tour of Ribadesella by visiting the old town.
The most relevant places are the old entrance of the town: the Portiellu neighborhood, an old fishermen's neighborhood, which you can walk through in a few minutes, until you reach the Plaza de la Reina Maria Cristina. There you will find the oldest building of the town: the Prieto Cutre Palace, whose facade is a Renaissance work of art. If you continue on, you will arrive at the Plaza de la Iglesia, which boasts the church of St. Mary Magdalene and further on the Casa de Collado and the Casa de González Prieto, today converted into the Post Office.
Following your tour, at the Atalaya Beach you will see some of the most traditional houses of the village, such as the Casa del Pixuecu and the Palacio de la Atalaya. Then you will arrive at the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Guía, located on Monte Corberu, from where you can have a wonderful view of the village, the mountains and the sea. If you take a winding path that descends from the mountain, you will reach the Paseo de la Grúa, where you can see explanatory panels of Asturian Mythology and, if you continue, you will reach the fishing port, after passing through "La Fuentina and an open-air museum.
A separate chapter deserves the Tito Bustillo Cave Art Center, where you can see the wonderful samples of cave art, a legacy left by the Magdalenian men since the Paleolithic period, with paintings of bison, horses, reindeer and deer.
Returning to the village, near the bridge you can see "la panera", one of the typical constructions of Asturias, similar to the hórreos. Next to the mouth of the river Sella, Santa Marina beach will give you a place to enjoy and rest. As a finishing touch to your visit to Ribadesella, on the first Saturday of August (actually you can do it all year round by registering with any of the companies that organize this activity), the world-famous descent of the Sella or Les Piragües, a four-hour trip in canoes or canoes, in which non-professionals can participate, is officially held.
The town of Ribadesella is only 12 kilometers from our house. Its proximity will make things easier for you when planning your visit.
